During the war, Nanny made soap and knitted socks for the troops. Mom said that she made one pair a day. I seem to remember that she made mittens too. She also made soap from rendered fat. All I can remember was the soap worked real well and did not smell too good. We would always go over to Nutley to have Thanksgiving dinner. The meals were always outstanding. This is where I acquired my love for mince pie. She put so much booz into the pie that I swear you could get drunk on them. When Mom's sister died when Mom was 11, Lucy and Dyke took Mom to Havana, Cuba for Christmas because they did not want to be home at such a sad time. After Gramps died, she sold the big Nutley house and most of the contents and moved to a garden apartment at 12 Loyd Court in Nutley. She is buried in Lot 415, Sect. 4, Grave 5 at Laurel Grove Cemetery in Totowa, New Jersey Her undertaker was Edward Stanton Funeral Home in Nutley, New Jersey. Her records do not list the cause of Death, although I understood it was caused by acute emphasima and perhaps cancer. I do know that she continued to smoke heavily. It is my recolection that there was a memorial service for her prior to her being buried. It was a very sad time. She is buried in Plot No. 5 in lot 417 Section 4 of the cemetery. Records show that she was 70 when she died. Medical: She had many aflictions including TB and what was probably cancer. Most of her surgery was done at New York Hospital and Cornell Medical Center.Nanny smoked heavily which probably contributed to her bad health and her passing away. He was one of the organizers of the company in 1933. He was interested in the ethical aspects of dealing in securities and as the founder and Presidcent of the Bond Club of New Jersey, he was instrumental in securing passage of the New Jersey Fraudulent Securities Act in the New Jersey Legislature. He opened his career by working for two years for a wholesale sugar company in New York City. In 1908, he joined N.W.Harris Company, predicessor of Harris Forbes and Company, bond brokers of New York City. He got his position by answering and advertisement and was in the securities field from that time forward, In 1920, he organized and became a partner in the brokerage house of Minsch Mimnell Company. Dyke was a great student of the Confederacy. He collected Confederate stamps, uniforms of great people of that time and he also collected afidavids and autographs of the great names of the Civil war. He served as Director of the New York Civil War Roundtable. In 1961 he was also elected to President of the Confederate Stamp Alliance. He also belonged to the Navy League of the United States and the Sons of Cnonfederate Veterans of which he was an honorary member. He also collected stamps from the Benlux countries, most notable were those from Luxembourg. He had a wonderful collection of antique valentines. Many of them were hand made and contained wonderful love notes as well as locks of hair and pictures. He went on TV, Channel 13, every Valentines Day to show his collection. He was a happy man who enjoyed cigars (Romeo & Juliet) as well as gardening. In the 1930's, he and some friends built a 9 hole golf course in a small town in upstate New York called Shandaken. Each of them also built beautiful homes up on the mountain overlooking the golf course. Because there were wild apple trees on the site, he named his summer home "Applenook". The house had a marvelous view of Panther Mtn. across the valley. The golf course has long fallen into overgrowth and has lost much of its land to the highway which now cuts through the valley. Gramps had a great vegetable garden at Shan. He was most proud of his Beefsteak Tomatoes. One slice made a whole sandwich. Gramps had a wine cellar in the basement of the house in Nutley. He was particularly fond of vintage and NV Champagne. Dad tells me that he had some great vintage champagne. He also loved Chateau ye Chem (sp?). Gramps was a bond trader and had his own company in Newark, NJ on Broad Street named "MacBride & Co." Burial: Lot 417 Section 4, Grave 4, Reg. No. 52459 at Laurel Grove Cemetery in Totowa, New Jersey. His burial records indicate that he was 71 years old when he died. His undertaker is noted to be Stanton Funeral Homes of Nutley, New Jersey. Although his burial records do not indicate, I recal he was cremated. He was avctive in civic affairs in Nutley, New Jersey where he lived for 44 years having served as head of the Social Services Bureau there and took a leading part in the local Red Cross. During World War I, he saw service in France in the American Expeditionary Force. She then attended the Knox Boarding School for girls in Cooperstown, New York. She was a big sport and won the competition for prettiest girl in her class. While at Knox, she lived in Cooperstown with a friend. Mom went to Duke because a friend of the family named Arch Sullivan was on the Board of Directors at Duke. Mom wanted to pursue social services. In her third year at Duke, she realized that they did not offer a degree in Social Services. She then moved home and finished her studies at NYU where she received her BS in 1939 in Social Services. Her birth is recorded in the Town of Castine Record book #3 Her SS# was 109-07-8486-B Her death certificate states that she died of cardiopulmonary arrest and cancer of the esophogos Medical: She was quite healthy with no known ailments until her 50's. First she contacted uterine cancer which was successfully removed followed about ten years later by lymphoma under her left arm. If I remember correctly, 12 lymph nodes were removed and finally cancer of the esopohegas(sp) which also engaged her lungs and heart. It was this final bout with cancer that finally took her life. Why people smoke with so much information about cancer is beyond me. He was President of the Dennet's Boat Works in Castine and was a skilled carpenter and contractor. At the age of 5, he was considered an able small boat handler. While attending Buksport High School in Maine, he went into the boatbuilding business with his uncle Jake Dennett. He was the last of the Dennett family to own and operate the Dennett's Warf on the Castine Harbor. A site of some sort of maritime activity since the 18th century, Dennett's Warf was operated as a sail loft by Dyke"s great-grandfather when comercial sailing vessels crowded each other at their moorings in Castine Harbor. Dyke sold Dennett's Warf when he went to Southeast Asia to build bridges with the Navy Seabees during the Vietnam War. The sail loft has since been ceen converted into an oyster bar and restaurant. In addition to building boats, he helped restore the Bulfinch designed steeple of Castine's First Congregational Society and Unitarian Church on Court Street that dates to 1700. Dyke constructed flat-bottomed and round-bottomed cedar over oak skiffs of traditional design. He had an aunt, Grace f. Goldsmith of Chester, New Hampshire.
